Paid Out, by J. Percival Bessel, is a detective story in which a marvelous diamond, supposedly possessed with occult qualities, figures. The theft of this gem is attended by a murder, which sends the thief, its perpetrator, wandering far and wide to escape the nemesis of his deed. Mysterious occurrences, harrowing experiences and remorse are incidental to his flight. The plot develops with surprises and suspense, with the best surprise left for the end, a surprise which indeed ‘pays out’ the score of wronged parties in the story.
